The core trade-off
Every store owner eventually asks the same question: build on a custom backend like Firebase, or go with an established platform like Shopify? The honest answer is that it depends on what you're optimizing for — ownership and cost, or ecosystem and convenience.
Why Firebase wins on cost and control
A custom store on Firebase, Supabase, Appwrite, Directus, or Backendless has no recurring platform fee. You pay once for the build, and the store is yours — no subscription eating into margins as you scale. You also get a fully custom admin panel built around exactly how you work, rather than adapting your workflow to someone else's interface.
This matters most for sellers in price-sensitive markets, or anyone running tight margins where a $30-$80/month Shopify subscription is a meaningful cost over a year.
Why Shopify wins on ecosystem
Shopify's advantage isn't the storefront — it's everything around it. Thousands of apps for reviews, email marketing, upsells, and shipping. A checkout customers already trust. Built-in payment processing in dozens of currencies. If you're planning to scale fast and want to bolt on tools without custom development, that ecosystem saves real time.
Headless Shopify: the middle path
If you want Shopify's backend (inventory, checkout, payments) but hate being boxed into a theme, Headless Shopify lets us build a fully custom frontend in React or HTML that talks to Shopify via the Storefront API. You get pixel-perfect design and Shopify's reliability — at a higher build cost, but no compromise on either side.
Our recommendation
If you're price-sensitive and want full ownership: Firebase/Supabase/Appwrite/Directus/Backendless. If you want a mature ecosystem and don't mind a subscription: standard Shopify. If you want both a custom look and Shopify's backend: Headless Shopify. Message us with your priorities and we'll recommend the right stack for your specific business.
